The dangers of “bio” diesel for sailing Netherlands.

Diesel engines are increasingly confronted with a recurring problem of filter clogging. This is caused by bacterial growth in the diesel tank. The beginning of the problem can be recognized by diesel engines that start poorly, smoke heavily, falter and sometimes suddenly stop. Upon inspection, the diesel (pre) filter appears to be completely covered with a slimy black sludge. This is a known problem for many skippers. Everyone has their own ideas about the origins and solutions for this difficult bacteria problem. Skippers have been warned with this information. It gives a clear picture and highlights all possible solutions. After all, every boat or yacht owner wants to enjoy his (sparse) free time undisturbed and not be disturbed by annoying recurring, filter-clogging bacteria. We also do not want our tenants in our fleet to suffer from this.

Diesel change: To improve air quality (sulfur dioxide reduction), Europe decided to make diesel sulphur-free in 2010. The sulfur content has been reduced from 1000 ppm to 10 ppm (mg/l). In addition, the oil companies are also obliged to mix vegetable oil (bio). The diesel still meets the EN590 standard, but these changes make the diesel more susceptible to bacteria, resulting in more problems, etc.

Bacteria are invisible small organisms that occur everywhere, in air, water and bio-oil (diesel). These bacteria only need WATER for their development (growth). (Condensation) water is created in every tank, no matter how well insulated it is! Water vapor is present everywhere, even in fully filled tanks! Chemically, condensation always occurs with any temperature change. This condensation water collects in the lowest point of the tank. These bacteria reproduce quickly in this water, this is done by exponential cell division (2 - 4 -16 -256 - 65,000 etc.).

The division takes place EVERY 10 minutes. It is then understandable that a number of bacteria multiply into millions in a few hours. These enormous numbers form the well-known slime mass, which comes loose from the tank bottom during fluctuations and continues to clog the fuel filter. The engine starts to stutter, loses power and sometimes stops unexpectedly. This is every skipper's nightmare, especially on a busy sailing route!

How to prevent: In water sports it is recommended to completely fill the tanks in winter. But even in full tanks there is air from which condensation water can form. A poorly closing fuel cap can also be the cause of water ingress. A good skipper always checks his diesel tank for free water before departure and removes it! This is often forgotten or the location of the tank makes draining impossible and not a pleasant job. The drained water DOES give you a clear picture of your tank situation. Cloudy water or black pieces/strings (in the water separator) indicate that bacteria contamination is present, which will sooner or later clog the filter. A new filter or bypass only offers a solution for a short time, because the contamination (i.e. bacterial growth) is not stopped. Complete tank cleaning is time-consuming, expensive and still provides no guarantee. The use of an antibacterial (biocide) additive is then a must and the simplest and surest way to prevent/stop this bacterial growth.

For this reason, we at HM-Yachtrenal have opted for the updated FuelSave diesel fuel from Shell, which has been improved by its composition for less moisture and foaming of diesel during refueling with the additional addition of antibacterial (biocide).

For our own fleet and of course for sales for you!!!!

Below more information and explanation 1 to 7 + A/D

1. What is the best fuel for diesel?

Shell attaches importance to the customer having a choice between a high-quality standard diesel fuel and a superior premium diesel fuel (Shell FuelSave Diesel or Shell V-Power Diesel). The best fuel you can fill up with is Shell V-Power or Shell V-Power Diesel. Both fuels are true performance fuels and offer specific benefits such as a cleaner engine that keeps the engine in optimal condition.

Shell FuelSave fuel has been developed to drive more economically and keep the engine cleaner by using cleaning additives and is therefore very suitable for diesel engines. Also very suitable for pleasure boating/water recreation. Diesel vehicles with Shell FuelSave fuels provide immediate fuel savings from the first refueling.

With HM-Yachtrental, extra antibacterial (biocide) is added. Due to the long and good experience of the Gebr.Vissers of yacht charter fishermen and of our customers, we are convinced that this is the best choice.

2. Can I simply switch to such special fuels?

It is no problem at all to switch from diesel fuel to Shell FuelSave diesel fuel from another brand, regardless of the brand. The additives that these special fuels contain can result in lower fuel consumption from the very first moment and with the additional addition of antibacterial (biocide) growth, virtually reduce the percentage of mixing.

3. What are the specific features of Shell FuelSave Diesel?

Shell FuelSave Diesel is Shell's economical diesel. The fuel has been developed to allow a diesel car that runs on FuelSave Diesel to drive and sail more economically from the first refueling. Shell FuelSave Diesel has been developed to ignite faster than standard diesel. This way, more energy is extracted from every drop of fuel. Shell FuelSave Diesel also helps keep the engine cleaner thanks to active cleaning additives that help prevent the formation of dirt deposits on injectors. This allows for improved combustion efficiency. Both the fast ignition and the active cleaning components contribute to lower fuel consumption, from the first refueling.

4. What are the specific features of Shell V-Power Diesel?

Shell V-Power Diesel is a unique dual-action performance fuel. Shell V-Power Diesel contains powerful, actively cleaning additives. These additives can prevent the formation of dirt deposits on injectors and even largely remove existing dirt deposits. Shell V-Power Diesel also contains components that help to actively protect the engine. This unique composition provides extra power, which improves the performance of your car. Shell V-Power Diesel actually makes your engine cleaner and stronger – whatever car you drive. The Shell V-Power Diesel was originally developed for the car industry, but is also very suitable for yachts.

5. In consumer programs, Shell FuelSave is mentioned in the same breath as premium fuels such as Shell V-Power and those of competitors. What's up with that?

Shell supplies premium fuels at the pump and not maingrade (standard) fuels.

Shell V-Power Diesel and Shell V-Power Diesel are our premium fuels, which are of superior quality. Shell FuelSave is premium fuel, but with Shell FuelSave Diesel we have taken our standard fuel quality to a higher level in the market.

Shell FuelSave is Shell's economical fuel. The fuel has been developed to enable every car that runs on Shell FuelSave to drive more efficiently from the very first moment and to sail economically within our sector.

6. How can fuel be economical?

Not all diesel fuels are the same. Shell FuelSave diesel additives that reduce the car's fuel consumption. This means you can drive more kilometers with a liter of Shell FuelSave fuel, so you can also sail for the same money. Shell FuelSave is the economical fuel with a good quality-price ratio.

7.Learn more about biofuels

A. Addition of biofuels

Petrol and diesel available at the pump contain biofuels in addition to hydrocarbons from petroleum refining. These are renewable fuels made from raw materials or waste materials of biological origin. European guidelines for the use of renewable energy result in a gradually increasing use of biofuels until 2020. The main reason for this mandatory blending of biofuels is that it contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

B. Fuel quality and biofuel content

The quality of diesel must comply with the European Fuel Quality Directive and generally complies with the quality standards agreed upon by car and fuel manufacturers within Europe (NEN-EN 228 for petrol and NEN-EN 590 for diesel). In addition to other quality requirements, the maximum percentages of biofuels in petrol and diesel are also laid down. The most commonly used biofuels are ethanol in petrol and biodiesel (FAME) in diesel, but other suitable biofuels are also permitted.

C.Percentages of biofuels

Diesel: Standard diesel that is suitable for all diesel engines may contain antibacterial (biocide) additive up to 7% biodiesel. This is also called B7.

D.Antibacterial (biocide) addition

These are additives that are added before filling the tank so that the natural effect of bacterial growth is reduced or not allowed. Oxazolidine are real anti-bacterial agents. These active substances kill the organisms, stop cell division and provide protection with ONLY 50 ml / 500 liters. This is also the addition percentage for our HM-Yachtrental yacht rental in Cuijk.
